"I’m a potter who makes fun and functional nature-inspired pottery. I like making pottery that can be enjoyed visually, feels good to the touch, and serves a useful purpose. Some know me as the “leaf potter” because I make small leaf plates and larger platters incorporating the textures of rhubarb, cucumber, and hosta leaves I carefully select from my garden. I also use antique needlework and more contemporary items to add different textures to some of my work.
As a child I was raised on the east coast and in Illinois, and as an adult moved to Wisconsin more than 30 years ago -- and am pleased to call Wisconsin home. While my professional work has been in the fields of education and public health I’ve always had a passion for the art and craft of pottery, including the making process. I trace this back to a ceramics class I took at Wheaton North High School. (Thank you, Mr. Wolf!) After a long hiatus, my move to Madison created an opportunity to rekindle my passion for making pots through evening classes at Lakeside Pottery and Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR). As a lifelong learner I continue to attend pottery workshops when I can. I am particularly grateful to know potters and other artists in the Madison area who are generous in sharing their knowledge and experience. I am currently an active member of the Madison Potters Guild and 14 South Artists, Inc." Narra Smith Cox
